For the 11th year in a row, the College of Business brought in the most donations for Colorado State University’s annual Cans Around the Oval food drive.

CSU and local schools together collected 42,293 pounds of food and raised $56,349, for a total impact of 324,038 pounds of food. The College of Business contributed 93,014 of those pounds, or about 28 percent of the total donations.

The college’s efforts are a group effort. The Dean’s Student Leadership Council spearheads the initiative, while faculty and staff work to promote the importance of giving and encourage the College of Business community to donate.

“Last fall, when I mentioned Cans Around the Oval in my class, I had a student come up to me afterward and let me know that she and her son rely on the food bank and that she was so pleased that the college was making this initiative a priority,” said Travis Maynard, associate professor and advisor of the Dean’s Student Leadership Council. “So, the impact that we are making with Cans Around the Oval is closer than we think.”

Benefiting the Food Bank for Larimer County, Cans Around the Oval is Larimer County’s largest single-day food drive. The tradition began in 1987 with the idea to line the Oval with canned food to promote a campus food drive. Since that time, the effort has grown in scope and impact, involving more groups and collecting more food each year. The Office for Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement (SLiCE) now sponsors Cans Around the Oval.

“Thanks to everyone for their generosity this year. We are sure that it will be meaningful to the individuals and families who use the Food Bank for Larimer County,” said Beth Walker, dean of the College of Business.
